Duties and Responsibilities

The incumbent for this position functions under the supervision of a Community Health Nursing Supervisor; works with a Community Health Nurse for daily direction in a free standing health clinic located in a school setting, implementing the School Health Services Plan in accordance with the School Health Services Act and H.B. 1739; occupies a ten month career service position and works only when school is in session; utilizes annual leave or leave without pay plus personal checks to maintain state benefits when not in working status. Furthermore the incumbent is expected to incorporate the agency values of Innovation, Collaboration, Accountability, Responsiveness and Excellence in all aspects of their work.

Duties and responsibilities:

Duties at School Site Locations

Maintain quality services delivered in all tasks associated with position as evidenced in periodic evaluation/monitoring performance of specific competencies by the school nurse.

In the event of disaster will be expected to report for duty during and/or after the disaster as needed.

All information held in the health records is confidential, with access governed by state and federal laws.

The incumbent is expected to maintain client confidentiality at all times. Confidential information includes the client’s name, address, medical, social and financial data, as well as services rendered.

Sexually transmitted disease and pregnancy information is of a more sensitive nature and is to be is to be maintained by the school health nurse in a separate confidential file inaccessible to other staff.

This employee will adhere to all regulations regarding confidentiality of client’s personal and medical information.

Observes and assess students for deviation from normal conditions;

  • records findings and reports abnormalities to the school nurse;
  • takes vital signs as indicated to determine what measures are needed to appropriately care for the student;
  •  provides first aid to any injured student or staff person at whatever location on campus this may be required (classroom, gymnasium, ,playground, etc.);
  • responds promptly to emergency situations which may require carrying supplies and equipment to any location of the campus;
  • perform CPR or other measures for stabilizing a student of staff member.
  • Maintain a daily log of students seen in the health room and enter notation on each student’s emergency information card.

Assist the nurse in performing all health screening for vision, hearing, scoliosis, nutrition, growth and development, dental, blood pressure, and records results on student’s records accordingly to county and state specifications.

This screening may require lifting and carrying equipment weighing 20 pounds or more. Positioning of the screener occasionally requires bending, stooping, or stretching to accommodate the correct screening technique.

Administer prescription medications (including injectable), records administration of medication and maintain medication logs, in accordance with School Board Policy.

These tasks may require bending, stooping, lifting, and reaching areas such as overhead cabinets and lower cabinets for supplies and equipment.

This also requires that employee be able to read, understand and follow written medical orders.

Assist with training school personnel responsible of administering medications in the absence of the health staff.

Assist the nurse on the follow up of referrals by sending letters, making telephone calls, and making home visits when indicated.

Verbal communication with parents, staff and students require the employee be able to hear normal conversational levels, and be completely legible, grammatically correct and submit on time to the nurse according to agency guidelines; assists with accumulation of statistical data for monthly reports which requires us of basic math skills.

Assist in reviewing health records, maintaining immunization records and students emergency information, making referrals to the nurse regarding need for further nursing intervention.

Performs specialized procedures as needed and taught by the nurse to comply with Public Law 94-142 (Education for All Handicapped Children Act). These tasks may require bending, stooping, lifting, and reaching to accommodate the need of the child.

Takes responsibility for the care and upkeep of screening and clinic equipment, as well as maintain inventory of health room supplies; keep health rom organized and clean using Universal Precautions.

Participates in educational programs, trainings and workshops necessary to enhance performance in the job minimum of ten hours annually.

Duties at DOH- Clinics (as needed)

Works with the clinical services team that includes physicians, nursing staff, and other paraprofessionals to collect and document health and/or immunization histories for clients in the electronic record as required. 

Consults with supervisors and examiners regarding client needs, concerns or problems.  Conducts pre-clinical interviews, to include, but is not limited to:

  • Adult and Adolescent Health,
  • Family Planning, STD,
  • Immunization histories.

Completes Medical history intake and update to include allergies, current medications, domestic violence screening, and vital signs.

Administers injections as ordered under the direction/supervision of examiner.

Offers education and information regarding Family Planning methods available and pretest counseling for HIV testing.


E-lab requisitions as ordered Enters HMS service codes on the date the service has been provided.

Provides and documents health education, referrals and follow up. 

Documents all observations and actions accurately utilizing the electronic record, and the Florida Shots Registry

Prepares clinical area for services prior to session:

Maintains a clean work area before, during and after services;

Directs clients to laboratory, clinic and examiner; assists examiner and nursing staff.

Other duties as assigned

Assists as directed  in SNU shelter.  Attends annual staff meeting.  Obtains all Florida

Department of Health and Florida Department of Health in Manatee County required yearly training.

Knowledge, skills and abilities required for the position

  • Knowledge and utilization of equipment
  • Knowledge of medical terminology;
  • Ability to effectively communicate verbally and in writing, utilizing approved DOH abbreviations when documenting in the electronic medical record.
  • Ability to maintain accurate and appropriate medical documentation in electronic medical record.
  • Ability to follow medical instructions.
  • Ability to work with persons of a different race, language, culture, or socioeconomic status. 
  • Ability to perform successful venipuncture in 2 attempts or less.
  • Ability to perform IM injections

Licensure/registration/certification requirements: Active License Practical Nurse License Florida Statute 458.3485. 

Maintain current CPR certification every two years.
