Nature ofWork:
The University of Colorado College of Nursing is seeking a CertifiedNurse-Midwife (CNM) for a full-time (1.0 FTE), benefits-eligible, MidwiferyFaculty Fellow position with its University Nurse Midwives (UNM) practice inAurora, CO.

Thispractice position is a 12-month limited appointment spanning from July 1, 2020through June 30, 2021. It is full scope including the provision of antepartum,intrapartum, postpartum, well woman and gynecological care to a diversepopulation of individuals seeking midwifery care and includes a Faculty Fellowlevel, clinical practice track appointment within the College of Nursing.

MidwiferyFellowship (MF) Description:
The Midwifery Fellowship is a 12-month mentored program that goes beyond corecompetencies for basic midwifery. The Fellowship is open to all CNMs who havebeen certified within the past 12 months, but have not worked longer than 6months as a Certified Nurse-Midwife (CNM). The Midwifery Fellow (MF) will workfull-time (approximately 40 hours/week) with UNM. Two shifts a week are in theUNM Outpatient Clinic from 0730-1700, and two are in OB Emergency Department(OBED)/Labor and Delivery from 1800-0630, weekdays and weekends. One of theoutpatient clinics is a Fellow specific continuity clinic. The OBED shifts arean Interprofessional Education rotation where the MF is paired with the Ob/GynIntern in managing night OBED, normal births and is supported by the OB teamand CNM. The MF clinical responsibilities may change during the 12-month periodto accommodate the incorporation of new opportunities.

Additionalfellowship opportunities may include 2-weeks, either consecutively orseparately, of travel to an international birth center site in Guatemala, orwork within the Indian Health Service system. The additional expenses relatedto the travel are not covered by the University of Colorado College of Nursingand are the responsibility of the MF. The MF will have mentorship and assignedcurriculum that is designed to support transition to practice and leadershipdevelopment. Involvement in a presentable quality improvement (QI) or midwiferypractice project is expected.


Work is performed independently under the general direction andauthority of the Director of Midwifery Services, UNM Clinical Practice Lead,the Associate Dean for Community and Clinical Affairs. In addition, the MF issupervised by the Fellowship Director and Fellowship Program Coordinator andwill have monthly meetings with mentors.

Student supervision may occur during clinical placements in the outpatientclinic after orientation.

  • Provide full scope care to gynecologic, antepartum, intrapartum, and postpartum patients
  • Utilize limited obstetric ultrasound skills, as able
  • Attend monthly practice meetings
  • Active participation in health plan contracts
  • Remain credentialed by the health plans and ensure credentialing materials stay current

    Minimum Qualifications:

  • Graduate from an accredited school of nursing or midwifery in the past 12 months
  • A maximum of 6 months experience as a Certified Nurse-Midwife (CNM)
  • Currently working towards AMCB certification
  • Current RN, APN and RxN licensures in good standing (Any State)
  • Could be working toward CO clinical licenses during application process and registered with DORA-Department of Regulatory Agencies. Must have Colorado licensures by date of hire.
  • Conditions of Employment:

    Must be willing to and able to:

  • Obtain current AMCB certification by date of hire.
  • Provide full scope contraceptive services and counseling on abortion services.
  • Obtain Colorado RN, APN, licenses by date of hire.
  • Obtain valid NPI number by date of hire
  • Obtain valid Colorado Medicaid Provider number by date of hire
  • Complete CAQH and all credentialing requirements prior to by date of hire.
  • Obtain current BLS/CPR certification by date of hire.
  • Remain credentialed by the health plans and ensure credentialing materials stay current.
  • Work in a normal patient care environment with some exposure to biological hazards and infectious diseases.
  • Preferred Qualifications:

  • Limited OB ultrasound experience
  • Professional experience utilizing a language, other than English, at a conversation level
  • Experience providing services to individuals from underrepresented groups and/or a low resource setting
  • Interest in clinical teaching 
  • Competencies :

  • Interest in clinical teaching
  • Exceptional independent judgment to monitor and respond to changes in a client’s condition
  • Interpersonal skills to work effectively with clients and other members of the health care team
  • Skilled in the use of the electronic medical health record
  • Excellent knowledge of and ability to perform clinical teaching
  • Participate in activities to grow and develop practice
  • Strong collaborative nature
  • Willingness and ability to actively participate in health plan contracts
  • Ability to remain credentialed by the health plans and ensure credentialing materials stay current
